What is Maca?

3 colours of maca

In Peru maca is often called the ‘food of the brain’ and has been a staple source of nutrition by the Inca for centuries. It is a root vegetable commonly consumed to promote energy, vitality, virility, hormone balance, and fertility. It is also a Peruvian natural remedy to combat stress and fatigue. It comes in 3 different colours – yellow, red and black. Yellow constitutes 70% of the annual harvest, red 20% and black only 10%. Once harvested it is dried for 3 months at altitude before processing and heat-treatment. See the whole process here.

Our yellow macachocolate macamaca for men and maca for women all contain activated powders (heat-treated) to improve absorption, and protect your gut from inflammation. Activating simulates traditional Incan preparation to provide a powder that is safe to consume straight without cooking. It has a rich, malt caramel aroma and flavour and can be easily added to your daily meals or drinks.

Our red maca and black maca is concentrated via the process of atomisation (concentrated extraction) to produce a low-flavour powder, rich in bioactive components (macamides and macaenes) that rapidly dissolves into water. Red and black maca contain different concentrations of macamides, specific for regulation of different systems. They both offer more targeted treatment of different conditions compared to yellow maca. To understand the colours of maca please review our blog here. High-dose atomised extracts are ideal for chronic, stress-related disorders and hormonal or mental health imbalances.

Both our activated and extracted (atomised) maca be easily added to smoothies, cereals, yoghurts, juices or even soups and stews to give your meal a powerful nutrient boost. They can also be consumed directly in cold or warm water.

When raw is not best – make sure you buy pre-cooked maca

If you ask any Peruvian shaman about maca preparation they will tell you that “cooking unlocks the medicine”. For 2000 years maca has always been cooked and for good reason, cooking maca kills mould that produce aflatoxins (cancer causing chemicals). Science explains why the Inca were right as we now know that the bio-active chemicals in maca (macamides) are heat activated and heat stable. Eating it raw can actually have negative effects on health and well-being through ingestion of toxic mould and aflatoxins (read more).

“All our maca is pre-cooked (activated or atomised) so it is ready to eat. It is lower in starch, mould and is more potent than raw powder”

Our Maca – From Farm to Table

How does it work?

What makes maca unique is the presence of novel adaptogenic fatty acid derivatives known as macamides and macaenes. These macamides and macaenes act as Free Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitors and preserve your own naturally circulating endocannabinoids. In particular, levels of your natural endocannabinoid anandamide increases with consistent maca consumption, which in turn produces positive physiological effects on many functions including; hormone production, neurotransmitter (serotonin) regulation, pain reduction, mood enhacement, neuroprotection and memory function. It also acts a protection mechanism from adrenal overload, stress and fatigue. In essence, macamides are like natural anti-stress molecules that protect your nervous system and allow your body to re-balance itself and build long-term resilience to stress. They function through regulation of the body’s natural endocannabinoid system and provide relief from chemical and hormonal imbalances.

Macamides vs Anandamide

The adaptogenic effect of maca comes from macamides that block FAAH breakdown of natural endocannabinoids like anandamide. Allowing them to circulate for longer provides positive effects on the endocrine system.

Social Responsibility Seleno Health

“Our maca is supporting marginalised farmers and the children of San Jose de Quero”

Why Choose Seleno Maca?

Our maca is economically, environmentally and socially sustainable for the people of San Jose de Quero (Peru) who produce it. When you buy our products you are directly supporting our farmer and their community. Our farm to table model creates the product together in partnership with our farmer and we profit share the sales as a result. $1 per 500g bag and 50c per 125g bag then goes to a fund to support the children of the community. The money is used to buy much needed school supplies, equipment, blankets, clothing and necessities for the children. We are not just funding our farmer but also his community.

Our development initiatives are bringing trade to the school and community through creation of a textiles production facility and eco-tourism. The result is long-term opportunities for the farmers, families and children of our community. When you choose Seleno maca you are choosing to support the people who grow and produce it, not just the corporations selling it. It’s ethical, fair, sustainable and socially responsible.
